Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 Remake has been critically acclaimed, but the studio isn't resting on its laurels. Their next project aims to solidify their position as a major player in the horror genre. This article explores their upcoming game and their vision for the future.
The overwhelmingly positive response to the Silent Hill 2 Remake has been a significant boost for Bloober Team. Despite the substantial changes from the original, fans have embraced the remake. However, the team acknowledges the initial skepticism they faced and is determined to prove their capabilities extend beyond a single successful title.
At the Xbox Partner Preview on October 16th, Bloober Team unveiled their new horror title, Cronos: The New Dawn. Game Designer Wojciech Piejko emphasized their desire to move beyond the Silent Hill 2 shadow, stating in a Gamespot interview, "We don't want to make a similar game." He revealed that Cronos development began in 2021, shortly after The Medium's release.
Director Jacek Zieba described Cronos: The New Dawn as their "second punch" in a two-hit combo, with the Silent Hill 2 Remake being the "first." He highlighted the initial doubt surrounding their ability to handle such a beloved franchise, given their previous work.
Zieba commented on the significance of their success: "Nobody believed we could deliver, and we delivered. That was a big honor...As horror creators, we love Silent Hill." The team's dedication and perseverance, culminating in an 86 Metacritic score, are a testament to their commitment. Piejko added, "They made the impossible possible, and it was a bumpy road...The pressure was big on them, and they delivered."
Piejko positions Cronos: The New Dawn as a demonstration of their ability to create a successful original IP. The game features a time-traveling protagonist, "The Traveler," navigating the past and future to save lives and alter a dystopian future ravaged by pandemic and mutants.
Bloober Team leverages the experience gained from the Silent Hill 2 Remake to create a more refined gameplay experience compared to their earlier titles like Layers of Fear and Observer. Zieba noted, "the basis for Cronos...was there thanks to the Silent Hill team."
The Silent Hill 2 Remake marks a pivotal moment, signifying "Bloober Team 3.0." The positive reception to the Cronos reveal trailer further bolsters their confidence. The studio aims to establish itself firmly within the horror genre. Zieba stated, "We want to find our niche, and we think we found our niche, so now we just—let's evolve with it." Piejko concluded, "We gathered a team that loves horror...So I think, for us, it would not be easy to switch, and we don't want to."
