Chess Enters the Esports Arena

Chess, the ancient game of strategy, makes a surprising debut in the world of esports! The 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC) will feature chess as a competitive esport for the first time ever. Learn more about this historic move.

Chess Takes Center Stage at EWC 2025

The EWC, the world's premier gaming and esports festival, has partnered with Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) to bring competitive chess to the global stage. This collaboration aims to introduce the classic game to a wider, more modern audience.

EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," expressing excitement about its inclusion in the EWC. He noted chess's enduring appeal and thriving competitive scene as a perfect fit for the event's mission to unite global gaming communities.

Magnus Carlsen, a retired world champion and current world number one, will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a broader audience. He emphasized the partnership's potential to grow the game and inspire new players.

Chess's Esports Debut

The EWC will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025. Top chess players from around the world will compete for a substantial $1.5 million USD prize pool. Qualification will be through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT) in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will battle for a $300,000 USD prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC's inaugural chess competition.

To engage a broader esports audience, the 2025 CCT will feature a faster-paced format. Matches will use a 10-minute time control with no increment, and Armageddon tiebreakers will be implemented.

With roots in ancient India, chess has captivated players for 1500 years. Its digital evolution, particularly through platforms like Chess.com, and the rise of esports have made it more accessible than ever, further boosted by the popularity of streaming, influencers, and media like "The Queen's Gambit." Its official recognition as an esport promises to attract even more players and fans.
