Our recent trip to Osaka, Japan, allowed us the exciting opportunity to sit down with the creative minds behind the much-anticipated sequel to Okami. In a comprehensive two-hour interview, we delved deep into discussions with Clover's director Hideki Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata. They shared insights on the development process, the inception of the project, and what fans can look forward to in the upcoming game.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time during the interview and believe you will too, whether you choose to watch or read the full version available here. For those seeking a quick overview, we've summarized the key points that are likely to excite Okami enthusiasts:
A major revelation from our interview is that the Okami sequel is being crafted using Capcom's advanced RE Engine. This choice was made to bring to life elements of the original Okami vision that were previously unattainable due to technological limitations. While some at Clover are new to the RE Engine, Capcom's partner, Machine Head Works, is stepping in to bridge the gap. Speaking of which...
Rumors have circulated about talent leaving PlatinumGames, including key figures who worked on the original Okami. When we inquired about potential involvement from developers like Shinji Mikami, Abebe Tinari, or Takahisa Taura, Kamiya hinted at the participation of some ex-Platinum and ex-Capcom individuals through Machine Head Works, though specifics remain under wraps.
Despite the initial underwhelming sales of the first game, Capcom has been keen on developing a sequel, spurred by the game's growing popularity across various platforms. As Hirabayashi explained, the project required the alignment of key personnel, which has now been achieved with Kamiya and Machine Head Works on board.
The sequel is indeed a continuation of the original Okami's story, directly picking up from where the first game concluded. This ensures a seamless narrative progression for fans of the series.
The beloved character Amaterasu, known as the origin of all that is good, makes a confirmed appearance in the trailer for the sequel.
While Okamiden, the Nintendo DS follow-up, has its own fanbase, Capcom recognizes that it didn't meet everyone's expectations. Hirabayashi noted that the new sequel aims to align more closely with the original Okami's narrative.

Kamiya actively monitors social media to gauge fan expectations for the sequel. However, he emphasized that the goal is not to create a game that merely meets fan requests but to deliver a fun and engaging experience that aligns with the spirit of Okami.
Renowned composer Rei Kondoh, known for his work on games like Bayonetta and the original Okami, has crafted the arrangement of "Rising Sun" featured in the trailer at The Game Awards, hinting at his involvement in the sequel's soundtrack.
The Okami sequel is still in its very early stages of development. The team announced it prematurely out of enthusiasm but urged fans to remain patient. Hirabayashi stressed that while they won't rush the process, they are committed to delivering a high-quality game without unnecessary delays.
