Black Myth: Wukong, a globally acclaimed action RPG, shines a spotlight on China's rich cultural heritage. Discover the real-world locations in Shanxi Province that inspired this breathtaking game.
Black Myth: Wukong, based on the classic "Journey to the West," is more than just a video game; it's a cultural phenomenon. Its stunning visuals, inspired by Shanxi Province, have ignited global interest in the region's historical landmarks.
The Shanxi Department of Culture and Tourism has capitalized on this surge in popularity, launching a promotional campaign highlighting the real-world locations featured in the game. A special event, "Follow Wukong's Footsteps and Tour Shanxi," is also planned.
"We've received a flood of inquiries – requests for customized itineraries and detailed guides," the department shared with Global Times. "We're addressing every request."
Game Science's meticulous recreation of Shanxi's cultural tapestry is evident throughout Black Myth: Wukong. From majestic pagodas and ancient temples to landscapes echoing traditional Chinese art, the game transports players to a mythical realm.
Shanxi Province, a cradle of Chinese civilization, boasts an unparalleled collection of cultural treasures, faithfully reflected in the game's world. A promotional video highlighted the game's recreation of Little Western Paradise, showcasing its iconic hanging sculptures and the Five Buddhas.
The video depicts these sculptures seemingly in motion, with one Buddha extending a greeting to Wukong. The Buddha's role in the game's narrative remains mysterious, but his dialogue suggests a potential antagonistic relationship.
While the full narrative is yet to be revealed, it's crucial to note Wukong's status as the "斗战神" (Warring Deity) in Chinese mythology, reflecting his rebellious nature in the original novel, where he was imprisoned by the Buddha.
Beyond Little Western Paradise, Black Myth: Wukong features virtual recreations of the South Chan Temple, Iron Buddha Temple, Guangsheng Temple, Stork Tower, and other significant sites. However, the Shanxi Cultural Media Center notes that these virtual representations only hint at the province's vast cultural richness.
Black Myth: Wukong's global impact is undeniable. This week, it ascended to the top of Steam's bestseller charts, surpassing established titles like Counter-Strike 2 and PUBG. The game has also received widespread acclaim in China, lauded as a groundbreaking achievement in AAA game development.
