WWE 2K25: Long-Awaited Return

WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience

2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvements with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new "Bloodline Rules" match type were unfortunately unavailable for preview. However, my hands-on time focused on core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode revealed some significant, albeit incremental, advancements.

The Showcase Mode, centered on The Bloodline, offers three match types: recreating history, creating history, and—most intriguingly—altering history. Experiencing these variations (recreating Nia Jax's 2024 victory, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering a Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins bout) showcased unique perspectives for WWE fans and marked an improvement over previous iterations.

Addressing past criticisms, the Showcase Mode's reliance on lengthy real-life footage ("Slingshot") has been significantly reduced. Key moments are now recreated in-engine, resulting in a smoother, more engaging experience. While complete control wasn't maintained during the final moments of one match, this is a step in the right direction. The checklist system, while still present, is refined with optional timed objectives offering cosmetic rewards without penalties for failure. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout addition.

Core gameplay remains largely unchanged, retaining the successful grappling system from WWE 2K24. However, notable additions include the return of chain wrestling, a mini-game enhancing the opening grapple sequences, and the submission system (optionally disableable). Weapon throwing returns with expanded backstage brawl environments and a wider weapon selection, including Logan Paul's Prime Hydration bottle. The most significant gameplay change is the introduction of intergender matches, along with the largest roster ever (300+ wrestlers).

A new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition in a Fight Club-esque setting, promises further innovation. While the preview focused on refinements rather than revolution, WWE 2K25 appears to be a solid, iterative step forward for the series, building upon a strong foundation. The full impact of the unpreviewed features will determine whether it truly surpasses its predecessors.
