At Anime Expo in Los Angeles, RGG Studio hosted "Essence of Fandom: Like a Dragon & Yakuza Experience." During the event, Chief Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto and Ichiban Kasuga's voice actor, Kazuhiro Nakaya, hinted at their upcoming project. They stated, "We can't tell you what kind of game it is, but I will tell you, you'll be surprised," as reported by @TheYakuzaGuy on Twitter. The tweet confirmed the game as a new addition to the Like a Dragon franchise.

The shift to a JRPG format in Like a Dragon 7 was already unexpected, so the nature of this "surprise" remains open to interpretation.
