Path of Exile 2: How To Find More Citadels

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 21,2025

After conquering the main campaign and tackling Acts 1 through 3 on Cruel difficulty, Path of Exile 2 players unlock the endgame and gain access to the Atlas of Worlds. This sprawling map introduces unique structures offering diverse gameplay experiences, including Realmgates, Lost Towers, the Burning Monolith, and the elusive Citadels.

Unlike the readily visible Lost Towers and the conveniently located Realmgate and Burning Monolith, Citadels present a greater challenge to locate. However, the 0.1.1 update enhances their visibility, making them easier to spot from a distance. If you're still struggling to find them, these tips will help.

What are Citadels in PoE 2?

Citadels are unique map nodes in Path of Exile 2, existing in three variations: Iron, Copper, and Stone. Each Citadel houses a powerful boss—a reimagined campaign boss significantly enhanced for endgame encounters. Defeating these bosses rewards players with a Crisis Fragment.

These fragments are crucial keys to unlocking the Burning Monolith, home to the Arbiter of Ash, the pinnacle boss of the Atlas. This unlocks the "Pinnacle of Flame" quest after your first visit to the Burning Monolith. Here's a breakdown:

  • Iron Citadel: Count Geonor (Act 1 boss). Visually identified by its large city structure with black walls.
  • Copper Citadel: Jamanra, The Abomination (Act 2 boss). Characterized by a large encampment surrounding the map node.
  • Stone Citadel: Doryani (Act 3 boss). Resembles a stone pyramid, reminiscent of the Act 3 ziggurats.

Accessing a Citadel requires a Waystone of at least Tier 15. Once inside, it's a one-life challenge; defeat the boss or perish. Citadels offer exceptional loot, but they're one-time encounters. Finding more requires further exploration of the Atlas.

Path of Exile 2 Atlas Map

The 0.1.1 update significantly improves Citadel visibility. A bright beacon now marks their location, visible even through the Fog of War. If you still can't find any, try this:

Travel in a straight line across the Atlas, revealing as much of the map as possible. Prioritize exploring areas near Lost Towers, as clearing these significantly expands your visible area, potentially revealing nearby Citadels.

Citadels tend to spawn in specific biomes:

  • Iron Citadels: Grass or Forest biomes
  • Copper Citadels: Desert biomes
  • Stone Citadels: Coastal areas of any biome

Citadels rarely cluster; finding one suggests others are further away. After discovering a Citadel, explore in a completely different direction to increase your chances of finding more. The 0.1.1 update's improved visibility should make this significantly easier.
