Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, has sparked excitement within the gaming community by sharing a sneak peek of the upcoming guest character, T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media, while also hinting at "future DLC." This announcement comes hot on the heels of the release of another guest character, Conan the Barbarian, which Boon used as an opportunity to reveal that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold, up from the previously reported four million.

Boon shared a captivating clip of one of the T-1000's Fatalities, where the character drives a smashed-up truck into his opponent, echoing the iconic chase scene from Terminator 2. This thrilling reveal has undoubtedly thrilled fans of the film series.

The phrase "keep trucking forward with future DLC" has ignited speculation within the Mortal Kombat community. While it might refer to the imminent addition of T-1000, many hope it teases additional DLC characters beyond the current lineup.

T-1000 Terminator marks the final character addition to the Khaos Reigns expansion, joining the ranks of Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Amid discussions about the game's sales success, fans are eager to know if NetherRealm Studios plans to introduce a third set of DLC characters or a Kombat Pack 3.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, has reaffirmed its commitment to the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav announced that the company intends to focus on four key titles, including Mortal Kombat. Furthermore, in September, Ed Boon stated that NetherRealm had chosen its next game three years earlier but assured continued support for Mortal Kombat 1 "for a long time to come."

Speculation is rife about NetherRealm's next project, with many anticipating a third installment in the Injustice series. Neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed these rumors. The Injustice franchise, which began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013 and continued with Injustice 2 in 2017, was expected to alternate with Mortal Kombat titles. However, the release of Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and the subsequent soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023, disrupted this pattern.

In an interview with IGN in June 2023, Boon discussed the decision to focus on Mortal Kombat 1. He cited the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the studio's switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine as key factors. Mortal Kombat 11 utilized Unreal Engine 3, while Mortal Kombat 1 leverages Unreal Engine 4.

"We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe," Boon explained. "So there were a bunch of variables involved that eventually we realized, 'Okay, let's do another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully we'll get back to the Injustice games.'"

When asked directly if the door was closed on the Injustice franchise, Boon responded firmly, "Not at all," leaving fans hopeful for future developments in the beloved series.
