Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Facing Lu Bu is a daunting endeavor. In my journey through Dynasty Warriors: Origins, it took me over an hour to conquer this legendary warrior. Yet, there are compelling reasons to challenge him. First, defeating Lu Bu earns you bragging rights – a true badge of honor. Secondly, your path may leave you no choice; aligning with Shu or Wei forces you to confront him in Chapter 4 during the Battle of Xiapi. Finally, triumphing over him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only grants you the trophy "The Strongest," but defeating him post-game unlocks the ultimate weapon, the halberd, providing clear incentives to take him down.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Preparation is key before engaging Lu Bu. Equip a weapon like a sword that can deliver multiple hits and stagger him. Choose Battle Arts that activate quickly and have a wide range, such as Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories that boost your health and defense, like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, are essential as Lu Bu’s attacks can rapidly deplete your health. Opt for a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be crucial for gaining Bravery during the fight.

In most encounters, Lu Bu begins the battle mounted on his horse, Red Hare. This initial phase is relatively straightforward; Lu Bu charges around the area, occasionally pausing to rest. Seize these moments to strike with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have limited area of effect, except when Red Hare leaps and crashes down, making them manageable to dodge. Once Lu Bu’s health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle commences.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu becomes a relentless force. His swift attacks and rapid movement across the battlefield are marked by a red aura, indicating he cannot be staggered or interrupted. When he charges, evade and prepare for subsequent charges, as they come in sets of three. Be wary of his grab attack, signaled by him charging without his spear; evade this to avoid severe damage.

His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow. With minimal preparation time, Lu Bu unleashes three massive arrows thrice, capable of juggling and decimating your health. Equip a Battle Art like Absconding Slash to cancel this attack from a distance; close-range options like Palm Strike will lead to your demise. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can be a lifesaver if you misjudge a dodge or get caught in a combo.

Lu Bu is surprisingly vulnerable to juggling during this phase. Continuous attacks will quickly charge your Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react swiftly to his moves, and remember: evade, evade, evade.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

When Lu Bu’s health is sufficiently depleted, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. Now unstaggered, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your objective is to break his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all your remaining resources – Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid strikes. If Lu Bu completes his Musou Attack, he will immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Breaking his Fortitude here is your key to victory, allowing you to finally defeat this legendary adversary.

And that’s how to conquer Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
