Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 25,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal decisions awaits players near the story's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this choice, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, exploring Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries significant weight; some companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (potentially 30) are needed for certain interactions to influence companion decisions.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.

Should You Free Orpheus?

This decision hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids.

Freeing Orpheus: This leads the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain, potentially sacrificing himself to save others.

Siding with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's assimilation, granting the party an advantage against the Netherbrain. However, Lae'zel and Karlach might disapprove, impacting their personal quests.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; free Orpheus if you're willing to risk Illithid transformation for a companion. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and force Karlach's return to Avernus.

Moral Considerations:

The "good" choice depends on player values, primarily loyalty. Orpheus, a rightful Githyanki ruler, opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's directives might seem overly demanding. The Gith prioritize self-preservation.

The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to Illithid transformation, but ensures a morally upright (if tentacled) outcome. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can yield favorable results for everyone.
