The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 26,2025

This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles boasting diverse game libraries. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, amassing a legendary game collection, many of which see modern re-releases. While these titles once challenged Nintendo's dominance, today they're enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa deserves more recognition than it received, achieving notable success as a 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming floppy-eared creature navigating the dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both titles are essential.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and a key driver of PlayStation's success. While a remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with dated polygon graphics. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revived a dormant franchise. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a standout, less philosophical and more action-packed, reminiscent of GI Joe. Its engaging gameplay is a significant draw, and its PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics show their age, the game retains charm. Vivid colors, an enjoyable enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses make for a compelling shooter.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

To avoid over-representation of Square Enix titles, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, while not reaching the heights of Chrono Trigger, stands as a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit underdeveloped, cast of characters. It also boasts one of the best video game soundtracks ever.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I enjoy most Mega Man games, objectivity suggests only a few are suitable for non-fans. In the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 feels particularly well-crafted. The Legacy Collections allow you to judge for yourselves.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many non-owned titles. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with solid action. Remember, its creator also worked on Ghosts ‘n Goblins. While initially easy, it presents a significant challenge later on.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Created by many Lunar developers, Grandia offers a bright and cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system builds upon the Lunar series' strengths.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures varied in quality. The original is arguably the best, prioritizing tomb raiding over action. This collection lets you decide, including the first three games.

moon ($18.99)

A Japanese-only release, moon deconstructs the RPG genre, acting more as an adventure game. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and underlying message are compelling.

This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch in the comments! Thanks for reading!
