A Retro Retrospective: Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Gems on the Nintendo Switch

This isn't your typical Nintendo Switch retro game roundup. Unlike other consoles, the Switch boasts a surprisingly limited selection of native Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles. So, we're combining both platforms into one list, showcasing ten exceptional titles available on the Switch eShop (excluding the Nintendo Switch Online GBA library). Four GBA and six DS games make the cut – no particular order applies. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the GBA version of Steel Empire, a solid shoot 'em up. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this port provides a worthwhile alternative, offering a potentially smoother experience. A fun title for shooter enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Mega Man Zero – Part of Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

The Mega Man X series might have stumbled on home consoles, but the GBA saw the rise of its true successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of a fantastic side-scrolling action series. While the initial entry exhibits some rough edges, it's a compelling starting point, paving the way for the series' refinements in later installments.

Mega Man Battle Network – Part of Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry warrants inclusion. Mega Man Battle Network, a unique RPG with a blend of action and strategy, stands apart from Mega Man Zero. Its clever concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. Although later entries see diminishing returns, the original offers considerable fun.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Part of Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow shines brightest. For me, it even surpasses the acclaimed Symphony of the Night on occasion. Its addictive soul-collecting system and enjoyable gameplay make grinding a rewarding experience. A top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Originally a cult classic with limited reach, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge catapulted Shantae to stardom via its DSiWare release. This game bridges a gap, essentially rising from the ashes of an unreleased GBA title. Interestingly, that GBA game is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Part of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Technically a GBA game (though initially unlocalized), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is phenomenal, setting a high bar for the series.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick features equally strong writing and innovative gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save people while uncovering the truth behind your death. A captivating and underrated DS gem.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a suitable alternative for those without a DS, offering a fantastic and uniquely styled RPG experience.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Part of Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to improved button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three games are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Part of Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

While the Etrian Odyssey series thrives on DS/3DS hardware, this Switch port is surprisingly playable. Each game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.

That concludes our list. What are your favorite GBA and DS games on the Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
