Tranquil Indie Game "Roia" Enchants with Calming Gameplay

Author:Kristen Update:Dec 12,2024

Mobile gaming's rapid innovation in game design is truly remarkable. The unique, buttonless nature of smartphones, coupled with their widespread use, has propelled video games in unexpected directions. Roia is a prime example.

This innovative puzzle-adventure game is the latest creation from Emoak, the indie studio behind successful titles like Paper Climb, Machinaero, and the award-winning Lyxo.

Surprisingly, Roia's core objective is simple: guide a river to the sea. Starting from a mountaintop, players manipulate the landscape using their finger to gently direct the flowing water.

Emoak's press release reveals the deeply personal connection Roia holds for designer Tobias Sturn. His childhood memories of playing in a creek with his grandfather heavily influenced the game's creation. The game is dedicated to his grandfather, who passed away during its development.

Roia defies easy genre classification. While challenges exist, the game's primary focus is on relaxation. Players journey through beautifully crafted environments – forests, meadows, villages – guided by a helpful white bird.

The game's visual style echoes the elegant simplicity of Monument Valley. Complementing the visuals is a captivating soundtrack composed by Johannes Johannson, who also worked on Emoak's Lyxo.

Roia is available now on the Google Play Store and App Store for $2.99.
