Rumor: Beloved Nintendo 64 Exclusive Coming to Modern Consoles

Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential upcoming release of Doom 64 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ratings—a strong indicator of impending release—list Doom 64 for these platforms. This follows the 2020 release of an enhanced version for PS4 and Xbox One, which included graphical improvements and a new chapter.

The original Doom 64, a Nintendo 64 exclusive, is a classic title many modern gamers may have missed. The 2020 port also launched on Steam, suggesting a PC release for this new iteration is possible. Furthermore, the existence of mods allowing players to transform classic Doom titles into Doom 64 experiences further fuels anticipation for an official next-gen release.

The ESRB's track record of accurately predicting releases, including a 2023 leak regarding Felix the Cat's re-release, adds weight to this speculation. Given the history of stealth launches for older Doom ports by Bethesda, a surprise release of the updated Doom 64 is entirely plausible. The timing of the rating update suggests a release may be imminent, potentially within the next few months.

Looking ahead, 2025 promises another exciting entry in the Doom franchise: Doom: The Dark Ages. While a release date is expected in January, the potential release of Doom 64 could serve as an excellent prelude to this highly anticipated title. Bethesda's strategy of releasing updated versions of classic titles provides fans a perfect opportunity to revisit beloved games while eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the Doom saga.
