User Backlash Over PS5 Update

Sony announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a technical issue affecting the PS5's Official News feature has been rectified. The company stated, "A tech error with the Official News feature on the PS5 console has since been resolved. There have been no changes to the way game news is displayed on PS5."

This followed significant negative feedback from PlayStation users regarding an update that introduced ads and promotional artwork, along with outdated news, to the PS5 home screen. The promotional material, including prominent article headlines, consumed a large portion of the screen's real estate. Online complaints surged after the update, which users reported had been gradually implemented over several weeks, culminating in the full rollout with the recent update.

The PS5 home screen now reportedly displays art and news primarily focused on the user's currently selected game. While Sony acknowledged the complaints, some users remain unconvinced, labeling the change a "terrible decision." One user commented, "Checked my other games, same issue. Most background images are now these awful news thumbnails, covering the unique art that gave each game its own feel. Terrible decision, hoping for a change or opt-out option. At least the Explore tab was ignorable; this infects every game." Another user added, "It's baffling people are defending this. Who wants to pay $500 for unwanted ads?"
