"Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrades with Second USB-C Port"

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 27,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 has officially been unveiled, bringing with it exciting new features and a closer look at its design. Among the highlights are the new Joy-Cons, which now double as a mouse thanks to built-in optical sensors. However, a less conspicuous but equally significant improvement is the addition of a second USB-C port on the console.

The original Nintendo Switch featured a single USB-C port, which often led to the need for additional adapters to connect multiple accessories. These adapters were not only costly but also risky, as they sometimes caused the console to malfunction. The Switch's original USB-C port was notorious for its non-standard specifications, requiring third-party manufacturers to reverse-engineer it to create compatible docks and accessories safely.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 sporting two USB-C ports, there's a strong indication that the console will adhere to standard USB-C specifications. This change is crucial as USB-C technology has matured since the original Switch's release in 2017. Today's USB-C standards, especially those supporting Thunderbolt, enable high-speed data transfers, 4K display outputs, and even connections to external GPUs, enhancing the console's versatility and connectivity.

The inclusion of a secondary port suggests that Nintendo is embracing these universal standards, which support a wide array of connections, including external displays, networking, data transfer, and high-wattage power. The bottom port, primarily used with the official dock, might offer more advanced features tailored for docking scenarios, while the top port could support fast charging, display outputs, and other accessories. This dual-port setup significantly enhances the user experience, allowing for the simultaneous use of external power banks and other peripherals.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 promises exciting enhancements, more details on features like the mysterious C button will be revealed during Nintendo's Switch 2 Direct presentation on April 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates on this eagerly awaited console.
