Lionsgate's Monopoly Movie Screenplay by Dungeons & Dragons Writers

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 24,2025

The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has taken a significant step forward by enlisting John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein as its writers. This duo, renowned for their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, is set to bring their creative flair to the screenplay of the film based on Hasbro's iconic board game.

The project will be produced by Margot Robbie under her production company, LuckyChap, adding another high-profile name to the endeavor. Daley and Goldstein, who also recently wrote and directed the original film Mayday, have an impressive resume that includes contributions to The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Their involvement promises a fresh and engaging take on the classic game.

The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing it. In 2011, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were tapped to write the script, but that project never materialized. Subsequent attempts in 2015, involving Lionsgate, Hasbro, and writer Andrew Niccol, and in 2019 with actor Kevin Hart and director Tim Story, also failed to advance.

However, Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro has reignited the project. With Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the screenplay, there's renewed hope that this version of the Monopoly film will not only start but also successfully "pass Go."
