Joy-Con Mouse Theory for Nintendo Switch 2 Gains Traction

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 25,2025

After the exciting reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 this morning, the buzz around using Joy-Con controllers as a mouse has gained substantial traction. The reveal trailer showcased a moment where a pair of detached Joy-Cons were positioned attachment side down onto a surface, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors. They then smoothly glided across the surface, reminiscent of a mouse on a mouse pad. A closer look reveals what appears to be a slider pad on the bottom of one of the connectors, further fueling speculation.

Rumors have circulated that this functionality could be possible thanks to a sensor inside the Joy-Cons, akin to those found in computer mice. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these speculations or elaborate on their potential implications. Enthusiasts have theorized that this feature could enhance gameplay in titles like Civilization, which typically benefit from mouse and keyboard controls. Yet, given Nintendo's history of innovation, there's also excitement about how this might be integrated into their first-party titles in novel ways. The possibilities remain open-ended.

While many details about the potential mouse support for the Switch 2 remain uncertain—as does the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button—we do have some solid information. The console is officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, with a release slated for 2025. A new Mario Kart game is in development for the system, and it will be backward compatible with the original Switch. More details on the upcoming software lineup will be shared during a Direct in April. Stay updated with all our coverage on the Nintendo Switch 2 [ttpp].
