Harrison Ford: 'Indiana Jones Proves AI Isn't Needed to Capture My Soul'

Harrison Ford, the iconic actor behind Indiana Jones, has expressed his approval of Troy Baker's portrayal of the character in the video game "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle." In an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, Ford humorously remarked, "You don’t need artificial intelligence to steal my soul. You can already do it for nickels and dimes with good ideas and talent. He did a brilliant job, and it didn’t take AI to do it." This statement underscores Ford's satisfaction with Baker's performance, who is known for his role in "The Last of Us."

"Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" was released in December and is considered an "authentic" addition to the series, though it may not be part of the official canon. This release came on the heels of the 2023 film "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which did not fare well with audiences. In contrast, the game has been well-received, suggesting that the franchise's creators might consider focusing more on this new direction rather than bringing Ford back to reprise his role.

Ford, who has also starred in the Star Wars saga and is set to appear in Marvel projects, joins a growing list of creatives who are critical of artificial intelligence in media. Notable figures like Tim Burton have called AI-generated art "very disturbing," while Nicolas Cage has labeled it a "dead end." The voice acting community has also voiced concerns, with Ned Luke from "Grand Theft Auto 5" criticizing a chatbot that used his voice, and Doug Cockle, known for "The Witcher," telling IGN that AI is "inevitable" but "dangerous," echoing Luke's sentiment that such technologies are "effectively robbing [voice actors] of income."
