Taiko (太鼓) encompasses a wide variety of Japanese percussion instruments. While the term in Japanese broadly refers to any drum, internationally it specifically denotes the various Japanese drums known as wadaiko (和太鼓, "Japanese drums") and the ensemble taiko drumming style called kumi-daiko (組太鼓, "set of drums"). The construction process varies significantly among manufacturers, with drum body and skin preparation sometimes taking years, depending on the techniques employed.

Taiko's origins are rooted in Japanese mythology, yet historical records indicate their introduction to Japan via Korean and Chinese cultural exchange as early as the 6th century CE. Some taiko designs bear resemblance to instruments from India. Archaeological findings from Japan's Kofun period (6th century) also corroborate the presence of taiko during this era. Their historical roles have been diverse, encompassing communication, military applications, theatrical accompaniment, religious ceremonies, festivals, and concerts. In contemporary society, taiko has also played a significant role in social movements advocating for minority groups, both within and beyond Japan.

Kumi-daiko performances, featuring ensembles playing diverse drums, originated in 1951 thanks to the pioneering work of Daihachi Oguchi and have flourished through groups like Kodo. Other performance styles, such as hachijō-daiko, have also evolved within specific Japanese communities. Kumi-daiko groups are globally active, with a presence in Japan, the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe, Taiwan, and Brazil. Taiko performances incorporate numerous elements, including rhythmic complexity, formal structure, stick techniques, attire, and the specific instruments used. Ensembles commonly utilize various barrel-shaped nagadō-daiko alongside smaller shime-daiko. Many groups integrate vocals, stringed instruments, and woodwinds to complement the drums.
