Zenless Zone Zero Voice Actors Say They Found Out They Were Replaced When the Patch Notes Went Live

Author:Kristen Update:Mar 19,2025

Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they learned of their replacement via the game's patch notes. This situation highlights the ongoing conflict between SAG-AFTRA and the video game industry regarding generative AI and its impact on voice actor performances. While Zenless Zone Zero, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly subject to the strike (pre-dating its July 25, 2024 commencement), the actors chose not to sign new contracts, standing in solidarity with striking union members and advocating for AI protections.

Chase, a SAG-AFTRA member, clarified that while the project wasn't technically "struck," it lacked the union-enforced AI rights they're fighting for. This prompted their decision to withhold work, a choice they knew might lead to replacement. They expressed disappointment that HoYoverse didn't communicate with them before recasting.

Thurkettle, though not a union member, similarly found out about his replacement through the patch notes. He emphasized that the potential misuse of AI poses an existential threat to the industry, justifying his personal stand despite the loss of a significant role.

HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment. This situation mirrors a December incident where Activision recast some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 voice actors, including Zeke Alton (William Peck) and Julie Nathanson (Samantha Maxis). Alton, while not objecting to the replacement itself, expressed concern about the lack of crediting for the new voice actor, potentially misrepresenting his abilities to fans.
