Sony Cutting PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus Next Year

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 01,2025

Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus strategy, focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 starting January 2026. This change means that PS4 games will no longer be a primary feature in the PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog. This strategic pivot was revealed alongside February 2025's monthly game titles on the PlayStation Blog.

The company stated, "As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog." This decision won't impact the PS4 games already claimed by subscribers. However, PS4 titles in the Games Catalog will remain available until they are cycled out during the monthly refresh.

Sony is committed to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising to optimize benefits such as exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, and online game save storage. The focus on PS5 is evident as Sony plans to introduce new PS5 titles monthly, aiming to cater to the growing number of players who have transitioned to the newer console.

The PS4, launched in 2013 and succeeded by the PS5 in 2020, has seen a significant shift in user base towards the PS5. Sony noted that "many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles."

There is uncertainty regarding the future of PS4 games within the PS Plus ecosystem. It remains to be seen if Sony will relegate PS4 titles to the Classics Catalog, which currently houses ports and remasters from the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3 eras. Further details on this are expected to be announced as the transition date approaches.
