Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 19,2025

The latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) set, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is set to launch on May 30, 2025. If you're a seasoned collector, you might not be surprised to hear that the launch has been anything but smooth, with scalpers and store issues already causing chaos around this highly anticipated set.

One of the reasons this set is so sought-after is the return of Trainer's Pokémon cards, a beloved feature from the vintage era of the TCG. Fans who remember classics like Brock's Sandslash or Rocket's Mewtwo are excited about this nostalgic comeback. These cards cleverly integrate iconic Trainers with their Pokémon, adding a unique twist to the game. Moreover, Destined Rivals focuses on Team Rocket, the notorious villains from the first generation of Pokémon, which adds to its allure. Much like the popular Prismatic Evolutions set earlier this year, Destined Rivals promises to be a fan favorite.

When pre-orders went live, frustration quickly ensued. Many fans trying to purchase the Elite Trainer Box (ETB) from the Pokémon Center website found themselves unable to get through. The ETB, a popular choice for those looking to dive into a new set, quickly became a target for scalpers. Listings on eBay appeared almost immediately, with prices soaring to several hundred dollars for a box that typically retails at $54.99. Joe Merrick from Serebii voiced his disappointment, stating, "I truly hate this. The way almost all Pokemon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved."

Unfortunately, this situation is becoming all too common. The Prismatic Evolutions set also faced shortages, and the Blooming Waters 151 box sold out rapidly. According to a FAQ on The Pokémon Company's website (per PokéBeach), more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB will be available later this year. However, some buyers are already reporting cancellations of their orders, adding to the frustration.

The demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG are at an all-time high, but it's also impacting the enjoyment of the hobby for many. While Pokémon TCG Pocket offers a digital alternative to the physical scarcity, it's understandable that many fans are frustrated when trying to enjoy the traditional card game. A visit to your local store's card aisle will likely show just how challenging it is to find packs. These exciting set releases only make the situation more frustrating. Hopefully, solutions to these issues will emerge soon.
