Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development

Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator

Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting a potential Minecraft sequel. A recent poll on X (formerly Twitter) revealed his current development focus: a hybrid roguelike/first-person dungeon crawler. However, he also expressed openness to creating a "spiritual successor" to his iconic creation.

The poll, conducted on January 1st, overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft 2 option, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This strong response reflects the enduring popularity of the original game, which boasts millions of daily players worldwide.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had essentially "announced Minecraft 2." He acknowledged the potential demand for a new Minecraft-like game and expressed enthusiasm for returning to his passion project. He emphasized that while he's open to either project, the fan response will heavily influence his decision.

It's important to note that Notch sold the Minecraft IP and Mojang Studios to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, any new project would need to avoid direct IP infringement. Notch assured fans that he respects Mojang and Microsoft's work and would proceed in a manner that avoids any conflicts.

Notch also voiced concerns about the inherent risks of developing spiritual successors, acknowledging the potential for projects to deviate from initial expectations. Despite these concerns, he sees the potential for a new Minecraft-inspired game as a viable and potentially lucrative endeavor.

While fans eagerly anticipate Notch's next project, they can look forward to other Minecraft-related entertainment in the coming years, including themed amusement park attractions slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," set for release later in 2025.
