Marvel Rivals Dev Faces Social Media Pressure, Announces Major Season 3 Changes

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 18,2025

NetEase Games is making significant changes to the Marvel Rivals post-launch roadmap, aiming to shorten its seasons and introduce at least one new hero every month. This strategic shift is designed to keep the live service momentum strong and engage players continuously.

These changes were hinted at in the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, a 15-minute presentation that detailed the upcoming Season 2. Set to launch on April 11, Season 2 will introduce the new Vanguard, Emma Frost, at the start, followed by Ultron mid-season. Both characters will bring fresh abilities to the game, setting the stage for more dynamic matches. However, the most impactful changes to the game's hero roster and match dynamics are slated to begin in Season 3.

In Marvel Rivals Season 3, which does not yet have a confirmed release date, NetEase plans to reduce season lengths from three months to two. This adjustment will accelerate the pace of major content updates while maintaining their commitment to releasing at least one new hero every half-season. This means that after Emma Frost's debut next week, players won't have to wait as long to experience new heroes like Ultron.

Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen shared insights into these changes during the Dev Vision video, stating, "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all. During this time, several discussions on social media have certainly added some pressure on us to keep the game as exciting as it has been since December. To a certain extent, we agree."

Chen emphasized the goal of maintaining the high level of excitement seen during the game's opening months, declaring, "With our goal of keeping the audience’s excitement alive just like our opening months, the real adventure with Marvel Rivals is just beginning." He further explained that NetEase aims to fulfill players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by introducing new modes and a diverse roster of characters. After extensive internal discussions and evaluations, NetEase is ready to adjust its systems to support this increased content flow, with more details to be shared before Season 3's launch.

Just hours ago, NetEase pulled back the curtain on Marvel Rivals Season 2, revealing a shift from the vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This update promises new outfits, maps, and characters, with further details expected in the coming weeks.

Since its launch on December 6, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success, attracting 10 million players within three days. Available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, the game saw an impressive 480,990 concurrent players on Steam at launch. Season 1 in January further boosted its popularity, reaching 644,269 concurrent players and securing its place as the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform.

Despite a recent decline in concurrent players, Marvel Rivals remains one of Steam's most-played games. The introduction of Season 2, and the subsequent Season 3, are expected to reinvigorate player interest and engagement.
