Fallout New Vegas Director Would Work on New Series Entry If He Had His Way

Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, along with several Fallout developers, have expressed interest in working on a new Fallout game, but there's a catch.

Fallout Developers Said They’d Be Willing To Work On New Series EntryBut It Depends On If They Can Do Something Novel

Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer has shown interest in developing a new Fallout game, provided he receives sufficient creative autonomy. In one YouTube Q&A, Sawyer stated he would readily create another Fallout title, but his participation hinges on the creative leeway afforded: "Any project necessitates considering ‘what are we creating, what are the limitations," he explained, "what am I permitted to do and prohibited from doing?'"

"If those restrictions are overly limiting, then it's unappealing," Sawyer further explained, "because who wants to work on something where the very aspect they wish to explore is impossible?"

Beyond Sawyer, various Fallout developers have also expressed a desire to revisit the series. Last year, Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky indicated they would gladly work on a Fallout: New Vegas remaster. In a conversation with The Gamer, Cain mentioned that, while eager to contribute to Fallout, his return depends on the creative latitude offered—the opportunity to innovate.

"Every RPG I've ever developed presented novel and unique elements that piqued my interest," Cain explained. "It was the game's inherent novelty that intrigued me, prompting the thought 'Ooh, I want to do that, I've never done that.'" He added, "If someone approached me and said, 'You want to make a Fallout game?' My response would be 'Well, what's new?' I wasn't even enthusiastic about making Fallout 2, so why would I want to create another Fallout? What distinguishes it?"

Obsidian's CEO Feargus Urquhart has also shown interest in developing another Fallout game if given the chance. However, in a Game Pressure interview from January of last year, Urquhart confirmed that a new Fallout game wasn't under development. "We’re not working on Fallout, and we haven’t even discussed what it would be," he stated.

Urquhart further explained that they are "quite busy with Avowed, Grounded and Outer Worlds 2." "I don’t know when we’ll begin considering new games, perhaps toward the end of [2023]," he said. "But I’ll reiterate what I said. I would love to create another Fallout before I retire. I don’t know when that is, I don’t have a retirement date. It’s amusing, you could say I’m already 52, or only 52. It depends on the day. I hope that will happen, but we’ll have to see."
