Speculation Mounts: A "Summer of Switch 2" in 2025?

Recent reports suggest Nintendo's next-generation console, the Switch 2, might not launch before April 2025, despite considerable anticipation. This timeline emerged from discussions with game developers, who reportedly anticipate a release around April or May 2025. This projected launch window avoids a potential clash with other major game releases, such as the anticipated "GTA 6," slated for a Fall 2025 release.

Adding fuel to the speculation fire, journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe hinted at a possible Switch 2 announcement before August's end. While Nintendo remains officially silent, they have confirmed an announcement before the end of their fiscal year (March 2025).

Nintendo's Current Switch Sales and Stock Performance

Despite the upcoming Switch 2, Nintendo's current Switch sales have seen a year-on-year decline. Q1 FY2025 results show a significant drop in both hardware and software sales. While sales dipped, 2.1 million units were sold in Q1, and the company surpassed its full-year sales forecast of 13.5 million units for the year ending March 2024.

Significantly, Nintendo highlighted that over 128 million users engaged with Switch software between July 2023 and June 2024, demonstrating sustained popularity even as the console nears the end of its lifecycle. The company remains committed to maximizing both hardware and software sales for the current Switch model throughout FY2025, aiming for 13.5 million unit sales. This commitment suggests a strategic approach to manage the transition to the next-generation console. The recent dip in Nintendo's stock price, however, reflects the market's response to the declining Switch sales.
